Experience a two-day micro-adventure in the unspoilt nature of Luxembourg! Here, you can alternately explore the river with your packraft and follow beautiful hiking routes through the forests. That’s why it’s the perfect weekend adventure!
Come explore the Haute-Sûre National Park with me in Luxembourg and enjoy the landscapes and the meanders through this nature reserve!
For your information, all these pictures were taken in July 2024.
Packraften is a relatively new sport, where hiking and rafting is combined. It’s the perfect solution when hiking in water-rich nature reserves like in Luxembourg at the Haute-Sûre. I did this trip in the middle of July with Travelbase and they offer trips in Luxembourg, Belgium and The Netherlands.
With packrafting, you hike for a few kilometers until you enter a point to enter the water. Here, you will float your raft to start your rafting adventure! Afterwards, you’ll leave the water, pack up your raft and hike back. All the while carrying the raft on your back!
Luxembourg is located in western central Europe and borders Belgium, Germany, and France. As it’s pretty central in Europe, the country is quite easy to visit. The roads in Luxembourg are very good and well marked, so the easiest way to reach Luxembourg is by car. You can also reach this country by train as there is a station in Luxembourg City.
Know that public transportation to the base camp is very limited, so it’s better to go with your own car.
It’s a trip of 2 days so it speaks for itself that there will be a stay overnight somewhere! Between the two hiking days is an overnight stay at the basecamp, which is a camping in Liefrange, called Camping Liefrange. It’s located in the middle of the hiking trails and serves as starting and end point of the trails for the two days.
On the camping, there are basic sanitary facilities, like toilets and showers, but there is also a restaurant where you can taste the local specialties of Luxembourg. At the basecamp of the Packraft Trail, there are also the basic needs, like electricity and a cozy place to relax.
You can opt to take your own camping gear with you, but you can also add this while booking for the trip. I added this option and everything was ready while we arrived. It costs €25 per person and it includes a 2 person tent, a sleeping mat, a sleeping bag and a sleeping liner. Don’t forget your own pillow tho! You can leave all your stuff at the tent, while taking only the important stuff with you on the trail.
It’s also possible to book an extra night before and/or after the trip, which is €20 extra. It’s understandable to do this as the trip starts exactly at 9 AM. This included breakfast on the day after your overnight stay.
It’s important to bring enough food on this trip as this will be very active! But you can also opt to get the food package, which gives you enough food for the 2 days. This includes 3 Adventure Food packages, fresh breakfast, granola bars, and a cooking set. There are vegetarian options, but also with fish and chicken! The price for the food package is €39 per person.
There are a few things you should take on this packrafting trip:
We started with hiking after the initiation lesson on how to inflate our rafts, how to cook on the stoves and other important information. The starting and ending point is Camping Liefrange. The hike starts through oak forests all the way to Romwiss. This is next to the meandering Sûre, where you’ll pass stunning views along the way!
The hike is around 7 kilometers long and takes around 3 hours to complete as there is a gain of 350 meters. It took us a bit longer than that as we navigated only with the map we got and it was harder than we thought! So, if I can give you one tip, just use the app for the route.
While arriving near the Haute-Sûre, it’s time to inflate your raft and start pedaling on the late. It’s around 5 kilometers with your raft from Rommwiss to Insenborn. This is a beautiful place near the park with a lot of meanders. It will surely take 2 hours to complete, but it was the most relaxing thing to do.
Once you get out of the Haute-Sûre, you still need to hike a bit back to the basecamp to relax for the evening and eat dinner. We hiked through Lutzlhausen en over a floating bridge. If you still have a lot of energy, there is a longer route with 5 kilometers more, but we skipped this as it was getting late already.
On the second day, we started our hike early so we could be back to the camping a bit earlier as we still had a very long drive ahead of us. The first part of the day is a hike through pine forests with amazing views. The hike itself is also 5 kilometers and took us less than 2 hours.
You’ll get into the water on one of the tributary of Haute-Sûre until you get to a dam, where you can’t get further. This is where we got out of the water, packed our raft and hiked for 15 minutes to another point after the dam to get back into the water. But before we did that, we had our lunch here. After the lunch, we did another hour on the water before hiking the last part back to the camping.
After packing up the rafts for the very last time, it’s time to hike the last few kilometers back to the basecamp. It’s a short, but beautiful hike and was actually my favourite part! Once we arrived back, it was time to deliver everything back and go home, sadly enough, as I truly loved this trip!
